Sermon Notes: Philippians 2:3-11

What does the cross teach us about how to live?

Philippians 2:3-11

1- Our lives should be marked by humility and compassion. (v.3-4)

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Compassion = Love in Action

  • Your thoughts towards others
  • Your words towards others

Ephesians 4:29— “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

James 4:9-10— “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers,these things ought not to be so.

  • Your actions towards others

2- Jesus modeled humility and compassion on the cross for us. (v.5-8)

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  • Jesus positioned Himself in humility, then He followed through with compassion.

3- Only Jesus can make us humble and compassionate. (v.9-11)

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

This task is literally impossible on our own! The only person that has the power to make us humble and compassionate is Jesus, and the fact that He rose from the dead shows us that!

You must know Jesus!
