An Anchor Scripture for Ministry

Do you have a Scripture that you go to when you’re really struggling or need to be reminded of truth? I know that over the years of my journey of following Jesus I have had some go-to verses that have helped pull and anchor me back towards truth. I have also found this kind of thing specifically for vocational ministry.

Several years ago I was feeling very discouraged and overwhelmed by all the people that I was ministering to. Many situations seemed to be making little to no progress (from my perspective), and I was searching for words I could find peace in. I needed to be reminded that it wasn’t ultimately my job to fix peoples problems or make them trust God more. Although I was an instrument used by God, the results were not in my control.

The words that I found comfort in come from the words of the Apostle Paul:

Colossians 1:28-29

We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. I labor for this, striving with his strength that works powerfully in me.

Let’s break this down:

  • We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom: The one that is to be proclaimed through every ministry effort, word and action is JESUS. We do not proclaim how great we are (or think we are). We do not proclaim our accomplishments, resume and all the opportunities we’ve been given. We do not proclaim our words in a way for people to notice how great we are. We proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. He alone is wisdom for life and able to change lives.
  • So that we may present everyone mature in Christ: At the end of the day a question to be asked is this: Have I helped each person I’ve ministered to, to take one more step in maturity towards Christ? Every person is on a different level of maturity. You would minister to someone differently that is not a Christian compared to someone who is a new Christian, or someone who has been walking with Christ for decades. I want to encourage others to move deeper in their maturity towards Christ, whenever they are in their journey.
  • I labor for this, striving with his strength that works powerfully within me: I love this picture. Paul is saying that as he labors and takes steps in obedience, the strength and power of the Holy Spirit works in and through Him. Yes, Paul has a responsibility, but God is the one who does the work that only He can do.

So, when I’m feeling overwhelmed or anxious about the ministry needs around me – I must remember that I am simply to be obedient with each person God puts in front of me. Then, I trust God to do His ultimate work. Hopefully this encourages you, too.
